Generative AI and Data Monetization: Squaring the Circle?

10 May 2025

A look back at the breakfast event we had the pleasure of organizing with RELX, featuring Céline Calvez (Member of Parliament for Hauts-de-Seine and Vice-Chair of the National Assembly’s Cultural Affairs Committee), Joëlle FARCHY (University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), and Mathieu BALZARINI (LexisNexis).

The occasion for a rich and stimulating debate, moderated by our partners Julie Carel and Mariez JeanSébastien, facilitating a dialogue between different perspectives on the role of input data in the AI value chain:

⚫An economic perspective, with Joëlle FARCHY presenting her preliminary report for the Higher Council for Literary and Artistic Property (CSPLA) on the remuneration of cultural content exploited by AI systems

⚪A public policy perspective, featuring the current work of Céline Calvez within the National Assembly’s European Affairs Committee, particularly regarding the potential reopening of the 2019 Danum Directive on the text and data mining exception

⚫ An operational perspective, presented by Mathieu BALZARINI, addressing the challenges faced by a legal publisher and AI system provider in harnessing the full power of generative AI without undermining the rights of creators, authors, and publishers

This debate comes amid the launch of consultations between developers of generative AI models and cultural rights holders, organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of the Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty.

Thank you to Guillaume LEBLANC (RELX) and the teams at JIN: it’s a pleasure to organize these events alongside you!
